Launched in the early 1900’s, the Buccaneer saw a long and storied history throughout its time both afloat and on the bottom of Lake Michigan. She first served as a fast patrol boat from 1925 to 1936. Her 100 feet of length and svelte 23 foot beam allowed her to cut through the water like a razor blade. Additionally, while she served as a patrol boat, she was one of only 13 outfitted with the ubiquitous 23 caliber gun, an effective weapon against rum runners on both the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes. Retired from patrol service near the end of the Great Depression, she served once again, this time as a party boat and pirate themed charter craft available for bookings to the general public. At the conclusion of her service to the partiers of the Great Lakes, she was sunk 10 miles from Chicago in 72 feet of water. With her moderate depth, she is a perfect wreck for intermediate divers to explore and consider her long and colorful history. We visit the Buccaneer from Hammond Marina.
