For our shallower Zone One dives, a good-quality 7mm wetsuit is typically more than adequate. Drysuits are popular and great to have, but they are not required. We do, however, highly recommend wearing a hood and gloves.
During the summer dive season, surface temperatures generally hover around 65°F. Once you descend to about 60 feet, temperatures will drop to approximately 45°F.
No, we do not provide or rent equipment. We recommend contacting a local dive shop near the boat or one of our partners as some of them offer delivery service to the boats. If you need help sourcing equipment, we can point you in the right direction. Just give us a call, and press the appropriate extension to reach the captain at that lake who will suggest where to go.
We dock at the Hammond Port Authority, located all the way at the end of the marina next to the casino. When you arrive at the security gate, simply let them know you are diving with Double Action Dive Charters, and they will let you through.
Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This gives you plenty of time to load your gear, check in, and get comfortable before the captain’s safety briefing. We leave the dock promptly at our scheduled time.
Return times depend primarily on how far the boat has to travel to reach the dive sites, but generally:
Our Zone One charters are perfect for newly certified Open Water divers or those new to the Great Lakes. These wrecks range from 20 feet to about 60 feet (the Louisville being the deepest). Because these are intact wrecks with vertical relief, you will often spend your dive exploring decks that are 10 to 20 feet shallower than the max depth.
Visibility in Lake Michigan is generally excellent and almost always better than local quarries. During the season, we typically see visibility ranging from 30 to 60 feet.
Our boat is custom-built for divers with bench seating and built-in tank holders. You will gear up at your seat, walk to the jump point, and execute a giant stride entry. To exit, we have two heavy-duty ladders at the stern of the boat. You can hand your fins to a crew member, but please keep your mask on and your regulator in your mouth until you are securely back on deck.
