The Eliza H. Strong was a wooden steamer built and launched in 1874. In her three decades of dedicated service on the Great Lakes she was actually sunk three times. The first two times, she was refloated, repaired and quickly put back into service. The third and final sinking occured on October 26, 1904 when she caught fire off of the coast of Lexington and burned to her waterline. Once the fire was put out, her machinery was salvaged and a few years later, in 1909 she was blasted by the Army Corps of Engineers as she was a hazard to navigation. Due to being blasted, she is not intact and the wreckage is scattered about the site. There are, however some remnants of the keel and decking still intact and visible. WIth her depth of 28 feet, she is a perfect wreck for novice divers to explore and hone their underwater skills on. We visit the Eliza H. Strong from Port Sanilac.
