Launched in 1881 as one of the most technologically advanced steamers of her time, the Wisconsin served on the Great Lakes for nearly 50 years. Though she operated under several different names throughout her long career, she was restored to her original, proud name just prior to her sinking in 1929.
On the eve of the infamous Wall Street crash, the Wisconsin embarked on a run to Milwaukee. Caught in a fierce gale during the voyage, she went down just off the coast of Kenosha, Wisconsin. While most of the crew managed to escape the sinking vessel, nine men tragically perished. The captain was among those pulled from the freezing water, but he died from exposure shortly after his rescue.
Today, the Wisconsin rests in 90 to 130 feet of water, offering a fantastic and challenging site for advanced recreational divers to explore. We visit this impressive wreck out of Winthrop Harbor.
