Launched in 1881 as one of the most technologically advanced steamers of her time, the Wisconsin saw service on the Great Lakes for nearly 50 years. Of course, she wasn’t always known as the Wisconsin as she underwent several name changes during her long career on the lakes. Just prior to her sinking in 1929, she was returned to her original and proud name. On the night before the Wall Street crash that brought on the Great Depression, the Wisconsin embarked on a run to Milwaukee. A gale hit during the voyage and she went down just off of the coast of Kenosha, Wisconsin. All but 9 members of the crew were able to escape from the wreck including the captain. However, the captain died from exposure shortly after being rescued. Currently, the Wisconsin sits in 90-130 feet of water and is a great wreck for advanced recreational divers to explore. We visit the Wisconsin from Northpoint Marina.
