The Straits of Mackinac served faithfully as a car and passenger ferry for decades before the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. Reminiscent of a time when automobile travel was still a novelty, many families hold fond memories of riding this 204-foot, coal-fired ferry across the straits.
Today, the Straits of Mackinac serves the Great Lakes once again, this time as a premier underwater attraction. Intentionally scuttled as an artificial reef in 2003, the vessel has provided divers with incredible exploration opportunities for over two decades.
Resting in the sand at 82 feet with her mast reaching up to a depth of 45 feet, the “Mack” is an exceptional site for intermediate divers looking to further hone their skills. We visit the Straits of Mackinac out of Hammond Marina.
